Edmund Bristow(1787-1876), a mounted drover with his dog and flock of sheep stops to talk.  Oil on board, signed and mounted in a period gilt wood and gesso frame. This is a particularly good and characteristic example of Bristow's work. He was known as 'The Little Master', and his work was mostly on a small scale. The pictures are affectionate records of English rural life, usually showing the countryside around Windsor, where Bristow lived and worked. His depictions of animals are particularly sensitive. More examples of his work can be seen at Anglesey Abbey (National Trust), Cambridge.

The missing piece from the frame has been restored.
